JAKARTA - An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 rocked Kupang City, East Nusa Tenggara Province, on Sunday at 21.49 WITA or local time.

Antara reported that a number of residents in Alak Subdistrict, Kupang City rushed out of their homes trying to take cover considering the earthquake felt quite large.

"It was so big earlier. I was watching the opening ceremony of the World Cup, suddenly it felt like someone was shaking straight out of my house," said Abdul, a resident of Penkase Oeleta Village, Alak District.

Some residents also admitted that they had just felt an earthquake with a fairly large strength. Because the shock took about 3-4 seconds.

Abdul and several residents also admitted that they did not want to go back into the house first because they were worried that there would be aftershocks with greater strength.

Head of BMKG Kupang Geophysics Station Margiono said the earthquake occurred at 21.49 WITA.

The location of the earthquake was located at 10.57 degrees south latitude and 123.86 degrees east longitude. The epicenter of the earthquake was 51 kilometers southeast, Kupang City, with a depth of 49 kilometers.

However, he appealed to residents not to panic, because this earthquake did not have the potential for a tsunami. It continues to monitor developments regarding the earthquake.

"Until now there have been no reports of damage to buildings or residents' houses," he added.
