JAKARTA - The Navy plans to add modern defense equipment to strengthen the weapon systems of elite Marine Corps troops, such as unmanned aircraft or drones and sniper weapons.

"The modern defense system will strengthen the weapon system of the Marines", said Deputy Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral TNI Ahmadi Heri Purwono, after leading a ceremony to commemorate the 77th Anniversary of the Marine Corps at Mako Marines, Cilandak, South Jakarta, Tuesday 15 November.

The Indonesian Navy is also exploring the procurement of individual weapons for special forces soldiers, namely the Jalamangkara Detachment (Denjaka) and Amphibious Reconnaissance (Taifib).

"We are also buying individual weapons to equip the special forces, namely Denjaka and Taifib, as well as individual infantry (Marine) troops", Heri said as quoted by Antara.

According to him, the effort to bring in drones for the Purple Beret Corps cannot be separated from the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Therefore, the Marines will be prepared to lead the use of this defense equipment.

"God willing, in 2023/2024 we will take the weapon, it needs a process, there are negotiations, there are offers, there are conditions on how to have the weapons, and so on", said Wakasal.

In addition, he continued, the Indonesian Navy is currently modernizing the weapons control system and aiming tools for two types of amphibious tanks belonging to the Russian-made Marines, namely the BMP-3F and PT-76.

From the results of this modernization, he said, the BMP-3F could lock 5 to 15 targets at once in the right and left positions. From that shot, the BMP-3F can fire automatically and successively.

He targets the modernization to be completed by mid-2023.

"God willing, by mid-2023 it will be completed, at least we have 57 BMP-3F tanks that are ready for battle, ready to be used for a time. We are trying to submit to the Ministry of Defense for the procurement of BMP-3F which is still pending", said Heri.
