The Date For Holding Simultaneous 2024 General Elections And Regional Head Elections, Komnas HAM Asks KPU And BNPB To Mitigate

JAKARTA - Simultaneous elections and simultaneous regional elections in 2024 have been set on February 14 and November 27. Komnas HAM asked the organizers and related parties to anticipate the potential for natural disasters when the five-year democratic party was held.

The head of the monitoring team for the fulfillment of the constitutional rights of Komnas HAM national Hairansyah Akhmad asked the General Election Commission (KPU) and the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) to coordinate regarding the mitigation and prevention.

"The election will be held in February and November, which is usually the peak of the rainy season in Indonesia, so coordination with the government, especially with BNPB in the regions to mitigate weather conditions and disasters that may occur in holding simultaneous elections in 2024 is carried out optimally," Hairansyah said in a press conference, broadcast on the Komnas HAM RI Public Relations YouTube channel, Thursday, November 10.

Thus, Hairansyah said the possibility of a disaster that resulted in the loss of life or the threat of public safety could be anticipated from the start or minimized.

"Given the 2020 election, where the pandemic in Indonesia reached its peak, one of the recommendations of Komnas HAM at that time was to encourage the government and election organizers to implement health protocols," said Hairansyah.

In addition, Komnas HAM also recommends the KPU to ensure vulnerable groups can exercise their right to vote optimally through special treatment (affirmive action) in terms of collecting voter data, procuring special TPS, to making access to polling stations.

"KPU is important to protect vulnerable groups such as people with disabilities," said Hairansyah.

He also asked Komnas HAM to pay attention to the right to vote belonging to prisoners, hospital patients, to indigenous groups of people. By providing accountable voter data, said Hairansyah, they can use their constitutional rights properly.

"In some cases in the 2018, 2019, 2020 elections, there are still records of voter data that have not been maximized, thus threatening voters," said Hairansyah.
