Komnas HAM: There were 45 tear gas shots during the Kanjuruhan Tragedy

JAKARTA - Member of the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM), Beka Ulung Hapsara, conveyed the results of monitoring and investigation into the tragedy at the Kanjuruhan Stadium, Malang Regency, East Java, showing an estimate of 45 tear gas shots in the tragedy.

"It is estimated that tear gas was fired at the stadium in this incident 45 times", Beka said at a press conference at the Komnas HAM Office, Jakarta, as reported by ANTARA, Wednesday, November 2.

Of the 45 total shots, he continued, 27 shots of tear gas were seen in the video received by Komnas HAM, and another 18 shots were confirmed by sound.

As for the party that fired the tear gas, they were joint personnel, namely the East Java Police Mobile Brigade and the Samapta Bhayangkara (Sabhara) police unit.

Beka said the type of weapon used to fire the tear gas was a long slippery barrel. The ammunition used is cartridges with caliber 37 to 38 millimeters, Flash Ball Super Pro 44 millimeters, and anti-riot AGL caliber 38 millimeters.

"The tear gas ammunition used is stocked in 2019 and has expired", continued Beka.

Beka also said that the tear gas was fired without coordination with the Malang Police Chief at the time. Then related to the details of the time, Beka said that the tear gas shooting in the Kanjuruhan tragedy on October 1, 2022, started at around 22.08 WIB.

From 22.08.59 WIB to 22.09.08 WIB, he said, Brimob personnel fired tear gas 11 times towards the south of the field. "Each shot contains 1 to 5 tear gas ammunition", Beka said.

Next, Brimob personnel fired tear gas again at 22.11.09 WIB until 22.15 WIB. During this period, Komnas HAM estimated that there were 24 tear gas shootings.

"Then, the amount of ammunition seen in the video is 30 ammunition, which comes from 10 shots", said Beka.
