National Human Rights Commission: There Must Be a Responsible Party in Cases of Acute Kidney Failure

JAKARTA - The National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) emphasized that there must be a party responsible for cases of acute kidney failure that claimed the lives of hundreds of children in Indonesia.

"Because this can be called a case of extraordinary events, then someone must be responsible for this incident", said Munafrizal Manan, deputy head of Internal Affairs for Komnas HAM.

Komnas HAM supports and encourages all parties involved or indicated to have violated the criminal element, they must be held accountable.

The Ministry of Health said that as of Wednesday, October 26 cases of atypical progressive acute kidney disease in the country had reached 269 cases. That number increased by 18 cases when compared to the previous two days.

In this case, Komnas HAM agrees with President Joko Widodo who suggested that the victims who are currently still being treated in hospitals be freed from treatment costs.

Not only that, he said, for families of victims of acute kidney failure whose children died, Komnas HAM believes that the government or related ministries/institutions should provide compensation.

Komnas HAM asked the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) to always convey developments or information to the public because it concerns the rights of the wider community.

"We hope that the delivery is as transparent as possible and as it is without being covered up", he said.

Komnas HAM said it was concerned about cases of acute kidney failure, which is suspected to have caused the deaths of hundreds of children in Indonesia, he said.

As an institution that focuses on human rights, he emphasized that related parties must pay attention to aspects of child safety.

"This concerns the right to life, the right to health, and the right to social security", he said.
