Presidential Chief of Staff (KSP) Moeldoko encourages the acceleration of reconciliation between two villages that are often involved in clashes in Haruku Island District, Central Maluku Regency. One way is by setting village boundaries.

Moeldoko emphasized that these efforts also continue to consider the aspirations of the two conflicting parties. Even during the reconciliation process, using a customary approach by involving local community and religious leaders.

"These two parties are basically brothers. I am sure, if we use a customary approach, there will be a common ground and this will be the authority of the local government," said Moeldoko in his statement, quoted from Antara, Monday, October 24.

Moeldoko also encouraged ministries and non-ministerial institutions to immediately prepare the rehabilitation and reconstruction process of houses that were victims of the dispute. This also includes replanting plants damaged by the conflict.

"There must be a target time. Before the end of the year, I hope that periodically there will be a process of moving residents who have fled to their place of origin," he said.

Until now, he said, there have been several achievements in handling conflicts on Haruku Island.

These include the completion of data collection for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of victims' homes, provision of compensation to victims of death and injuries, distribution of aid to residents who have fled until a conducive situation is maintained.

Acting Central Maluku Regent Muhamat Marasabessy said that so far the local government together with the National Police and the TNI have tried to reconcile by bringing together residents of Kariuw and Pelauw villages. However, efforts to bring the two parties together have not been successful.

"In early November, we will invite two parties to discuss the determination of the state (village) boundaries. Of course we need the support of all parties, including from KSP and other ministries," said Marasabessy.

Moeldoko's suggestion was conveyed in a coordination meeting at the ministry level and non-ministerial institutions related to the follow-up to handling social conflicts on Haruku Island on Monday, October 24.

In the meeting, it was decided that BNPB would be the executor of rehabilitation and reconstruction of the victims' houses. A total of 300 houses were damaged by the conflict.

Also attending the coordination meeting were Acting Regent of Central Maluku Muhamat Marasadessy, Regional Secretary of the Maluku Provincial Government Sadli Le, Maluku Police Chief Inspector General Pol. Lotharia Latif, as well as representatives from the TNI and related ministries or institutions.
