JAKARTA - Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin said, according to research results, there were three dangerous chemicals found inLATHED drugs consumed by pediatric patients who had acute kidney failure. Namely, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, and ethylene glycol butyl ether.
Budi said, ethylene glycol (EG), diethylene glycol (DEG), and ethylene glycol butyl ether (EGBE) shouldn't be in keys. Even if there is a level, it must be very small.
These chemicals can appear when polyethylene glycol, whose tolerance limit is determined, is used as an increase in solubility in mediated medicines.
According to Farmakope Indonesia, EG and DEG are not used in drug formulations, but it is possible to exist in the form of contaminants in additional ingredients for preparing principles with a tolerance value of 0.1 percent in glycerin and glycol propylene and 0.25 percent in polyethylene glycol.
"The Ministry of Health has temporarily banned the sale and use of free and/or free drugs in the form of sirops in an effort to reduce the risk factors for acute kidney failure," Budi was quoted as saying in a press release by the Ministry of Health's Bureau of Communication and Public Services in Jakarta, Antara, Thursday, October 20.
The Ministry of Health also instructed health workers to temporarily stop the treatment of drugs in the form of sirops suspected of being contaminated with EG and DEG.
"While waiting for the BPOM (Food and Drug Supervisory Agency) to finalize the results of their quantitative research, the Ministry of Health is taking a conservative position while banning the use of sirop drugs," said the Minister of Health.
Residents whose children need mild medicine that cannot be replaced by other medicinal preparations such as anti-epilepsy drugs are advised to consult a pediatrician or child consultant.
Budi added that the number of children under the age of five identified as having acute kidney failure has reached 70s per month.
"The identified capacity for acute kidney failure has reached 70s per month, the reality is definitely more than this, with the death rate approaching 50 percent," he said.
