JAKARTA - Head of the Independent Fact Finding Joint Team (TGIPF) of the Malang Kanjuruhan Stadium, Mahfud MD, said the team would check the content of expired tear gas used by the police to the laboratory.
"The important evidence obtained from the field is currently being studied and some are also being examined in the laboratory. For example, it concerns the content of expired tear gas," said Mahfud MD during a press conference at the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Office, Jakarta, Antara, Tuesday, October 11.
The examination of the laboratory was to find out the level of danger, whether it was more dangerous or not, than that the tear gas did not expire.
Mahfud, who also serves as Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (Menko Polhukam), said the team found that some of the sprayed gases had expired.
"Some will still be examined whether it expires or not," he said.
TGIPF The Malang Kanjuruhan Stadium event, Wednesday, will conduct an analysis as well as draw up conclusions and recommendations, so that the report can be submitted to President Joko Widodo. TGIPF member Rhenald Kasali said the use of tear gas that had expired by the police was a violation.
"Of course it is a deviation, of course it is a violation," said Rhenald Kasali at the Office of the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Jakarta, Monday.
According to Rhenald, the police are now not military-based police officers, but civilian police. Therefore, the use of weapons should be to paralyze, not turn off.
"So, it's not a weapon to kill, but a weapon to paralyze so as not to cause aggressiveness; what happens is actually deadly. So, this must be repaired," said Rhenald Kasali.
The National Police confirmed that there were tear gas that had expired which was used to secure chaos at the Kanjuruhan Stadium, Malang. However, according to the police, the effects of the chemical liquid were reduced compared to non-exchange tear gas.
"There are some that were found ( tear gas) in 2021. I still don't know the number, but there are some," said Head of the Public Relations Division of the National Police Inspector General Pol. Dedi Prasetyo at the National Police Headquarters, Jakarta, Monday.
Although it is not yet known how many expired tear gas were used during the riots at the Kanjuruhan Stadium, Saturday (1/10), Dedi ensured that most of the tear gas or chromobenzalmononitrile (CS) at that time were still valid with the red and blue CS type.
The two-star police general said that there were three types of tear gas used by Brimob personnel throughout Indonesia, namely red, blue, and green. Its use is also regulated in accordance with mass escalation and the level of contingent that occurs.
