JAKARTA - The Surabaya City Government has added workers and tools to accelerate the construction of flow channels in the city center region ahead of the rainy season.

Mayor of Surabaya, Eri Cahyadi, said that the construction of the channel was speeding and carried out during the day and night.

"On average, the work is done at night, if the rainy season like this means it can't be done at night, it has to be noon. People ask, why does it have to be done in the afternoon? (It causes) traffic jams. Well, choose traffic jams or floods? If it doesn't work, it will be flooded, it will be stuck this afternoon, it's only been a while and not forever," explained Eri Cahyadi, Friday, October 7, quoted from Antara.

With the construction of the channel, Eri admitted that he had not received any flood reports in the city of Surabaya.

"Alhamdulillah, there is none. Examples in the Babatan Street area, when it rained heavily in the village, but did not enter the house. After that (installed) it was finished (not flooded)," said Cak Eri.

Cak Eri explained that several box culverts that had been installed were able to block water discharges that used to cause flooding, such as in the Babatan 1 Street area and the Jalan Gadel City area of Surabaya.

"In the past, for 12 years when it rained in Babatan, it was flooded. Likewise, residents in the Jalan Gadel area also reported the same thing, namely there were no complaints of flooding," he said.

Cak Eri said the Surabaya City Government would continue to work on channels simultaneously even though it was raining in the City of Heroes because the target for the completion of the channel construction must be completed in November 2022.

"Our target in November 2022 is complete, but the rain has advanced (down). But indeed some places have box culvert installed, only the above (complete) has not yet," he said.

According to Cak Eri, the construction of the box culvert channel or installation is carried out at 55 points in the city of Surabaya.
