JAKARTA - The Washington Monument was temporarily closed and a man was arrested late Tuesday, for allegedly damaging the monument with paint.
Shaun Ray Deaton, 44, from Bloomington, Indiana, was arrested on Tuesday at 19:30, the United States Park Police (USPP) said in a statement on Wednesday.
The man splashed red paint and wrote an indecent message on the bottom of the monument, police said.
"Deaton was charged with offenses, vandalism and vandalism (36 CFR2.31). This is an initial criminal charge and, as the investigation continues, there may be additional demands," USPP said in a statement.
Work by National Park Service conservators has begun removing paint. USPP asked anyone with information about the incident to contact them.
"The top layer of the paint will be released and the pigment absorbed into the rock will be processed with many cleaning product applications," National Mall unit said of National Park Service, Wednesday on Twitter.
The 550-foot-high monument is a popular tourist attraction located at the National Mall between Lincoln Memorial and the Capitol in Washington DC, citing Reuters.
Not long after, the monument reopened on Wednesday morning.
