JAKARTA - A retired nurse managed to help a baby who stopped breathing, on a Spirit Airines flight from Pittsburgh to Orlando, United States.

Tamara Panzino told CNN WESH affiliate she was reading a book with her earbud when she heard a flight attendant say, "we have a baby who is not breathing."

The announcement was made after asking if there was a doctor on the plane. The retired nurse ran to the back of the plane to see if she could help.

"I don't know what I'm dealing with," Panzino told WESH.

"I saw a baby. His head was weak and his lips were blue. And my heart just fell," he continued.

Panzino asked him a few questions and started working, handing the three-month-old baby over to his father.

"He holds it when I rub my chest, it's kind of an aggressive shake in the chest. Make the baby react by pinching it. Trying to make it cry or take a deep breath," Panzino told WESH.

Slowly, his condition improved and was no longer blue, with Panzino not needing CPR.

The incident occurred on a Spirit 1691 flight from Pittsburgh to Orlando on Thursday two weeks ago, according to airlines.

"We express our deepest gratitude to Tamara for coming to help our guests, and we commend our crew for their quick response," the airline said in a statement.

"Our Preservations are trained to respond to the state of medical emergency on planes and utilize some of the resources, including communicating with the medical professionals we appointed on the ground, using medical kits on planes, and receiving assistance from trusted medical professionals traveling on flights," Spirit said in the statement.

Panzino said airlines had everything the team needed to respond on the plane.

"The baby will be fine. The color is back. I heard the sound of breath. Hearing the heartbeat. Oh my, I'm so relieved," he concluded.
