JAKARTA - The Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture (Kemenko PMK) supports the revision of Government Regulation Number 109 of 2012 concerning Security of Materials Containing Addictive Substances in the Form of Tobacco Products for Health in an effort to protect children.

"The Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture supports the revision of PP 109/2012 to improve regulatory gaps that are still considered weak and also in the hope of controlling novice smokers in child protection efforts," said Assistant Deputy for Disease Control and Control at the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture, Nancy Dian Anggraeni in Jakarta, quoted from Antara, Tuesday 30 August.

During the launch of the book "Medan for Cigarette Control in Indonesia" which was accessed online, Nancy said the revision of PP 109/2012 also aims to prepare stronger regulatory needs in order to carry out the mandate of Presidential Regulation 18/2020 concerning the National Medium-Term Development Plan for 2020-2024.

"Perpres Number 18 of 2020 targets a decrease in smokers aged 10-18 years from 9.1 percent to 8.7 percent in 2024 so that this revision focuses on controlling novice smokers in child protection efforts," he said.

He added that the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture through the Deputy for Coordination of Health Quality Improvement and Population Development on 27 July 2022 had held a Public Test on the Revised PP No. 109 of 2012.

The public test activity, he said, aims to open up the widest possible space for the general public in providing various inputs and views in relation to the revision of Government Regulation No. 109 of 2012.

"The Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture organizes public trials with the aim of opening up space for participation for individuals or groups who have an interest in the substance of the draft amendment to Government Regulations by providing input and views," he said.

Previously, Deputy for Coordination for Health Quality Improvement and Population Development of the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture Agus Suprapto said the PP 109/2012 revision public test raised the tagline #Protected ChildrenIndonesiaMaju and #RokokNot Create Children.

The PP 109/2012 revision public trial was also attended by Deputy Minister of Health Dante Saksono Harbuwono, representatives of tobacco product entrepreneurs, professional organizations, representatives of farmers and workers, academics, youth organizations, as well as representatives of women's organizations and child protection.
