JAKARTA - British aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales (R09) was damaged off the south coast, a day after embarking on a voyage to the United States.

HMS Prince of Wales, the Royal Navy's second aircraft carrier, is experiencing "mechanical problems that arise," a spokesman said, with issues being investigated.

The £3 billion aircraft carrier, which was just fully operational last year, was reported to have docked in the southeast of the Isle of Wight while an investigation was underway.

"HMS Prince of Wales remains in the Southern Beach Training Area while conducting an investigation into the mechanical issues that arise," a Royal Navy spokesman said, citing Sky News Aug. 29.

This issue was first reported by the UK Defense Journal, citing an unconfirmed report of damage to the right propeller axis.

Meanwhile, the Navy Lookout website said the 65,000-ton warship had a "significant technical error".

"If this problem proves serious, it goes without saying that it is very unfortunate and does not look good for the RN (Royal Navy)," he reported.

The warship departed Portsmouth on Saturday on a "former future operation of stealth jets and drones off the coast of North America and in the Caribbean".

Initially, the aircraft carrier was planned to visit New York, Halifax in Canada and the Caribbean, operating a fifth-generation F-35 fast jet from the deck and drones.

"Membawa kelompok tugas HMS Prince of Wales melintas Atlantic untuk sisa tahun ini tidak hanya akan mendorong batas-batas operasi kapal induk Inggris. Tetapi akan memperkuat hubungan kerja dekat kita dengan akukan terdekat kita," ujar Komandan HMS Prince of Wales (R09) Captain Richard Hewitt sebelum keberangkatan.

"From operating the F35 Lightnings and drones to hosting the Atlantic Future Forum, none of this would have been possible without the incredible sailors on board, many of whom were in their first deployment with the Royal Navy."

The aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales, which leads the aircraft carrier task force, was deployed with frigates, tankers and helicopter and drone air groups.
