JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (Menko Polhukam) Mahfud MD said the Draft Criminal Code (RKUHP) is ready to be promulgated.

Mahfud said that after 59 years of continuous discussion, the law could finally be enacted.

"After no less than 59 years, to be precise since 1963 we have discussed changes to the Criminal Code, thank God, now we have produced a Draft Criminal Code (RKUHP) which is relatively ready to be promulgated," said Mahfud when he was a keynote speaker at the Kick event. Off Public Discussion on the RKUHP which was broadcast on the Ministry of Communications and Information's YouTube TV, Tuesday, 23 August.

Mahfud said that the discussion of the RKUHP had been carried out by a different team. In addition, the seven presidents also often provide political and legal directions.

"So it can be said that this draft is ready to be implemented. Socialization and dialogue have been carried out massively in parliament, government offices, campuses, and the wider community during the 59-year journey of the RKUHP," he said.

The former Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court (MK) said the RKUHP was prepared with two ways of imposing sanctions, namely criminal sanctions and sanctions for actions that have not been regulated in the current Criminal Code.

Mahfud also ensured that this RKUHP would provide space for the implementation of restorative justice. "Likewise, this RKUHP regulates customary law as living law," he said.

He knew that the RKUHP still had several issues that needed to be discussed and re-examined. So, he wants the discussion to continue while socializing.

"Currently, there are still some issues that need to be discussed and re-examined. Let's discuss them to reach an understanding and a more appropriate reformula," he concluded.
