JAKARTA - The head of the UK's Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) Jeremy Fleming said Russia had failed to control cyberspace against Ukraine, nearly six months after it invaded the country.
Writing in The Economist, intelligence chief Fleming wrote, the two countries have used cyber capabilities in the current war.
"So far, President Putin has completely lost the information war in Ukraine and in the West. While it's worth celebrating, we shouldn't underestimate how Russian disinformation is happening elsewhere in the world," Fleming wrote.
"Just like its ground invasion, Russia's initial online plans appear to have failed. The country's use of offensive cyber tools is irresponsible and indiscriminate," Fleming continued.
Furthermore, Fleming said Russia had spread the WhisperGate malware, to destroy and damage the Ukrainian Government system.
He also said Russia had used the same guidelines before in Syria and the Balkans, saying online disinformation was a major part of Russia's strategy.
However, GCHQ has been able to intercept and provide timely warnings, Fleming said.
Without elaborating further, Fleming added that the British National Cyber Force could respond to Russia, by deploying British military units using offensive cyber tools.
