SURABAYA - Surabaya Mayor Eri Cahyadi has prepared a strategy so that high school/vocational school children do not drop out of school, especially for low-income people (MBR). One of them is by ensuring that the cost of education is borne by the Surabaya City Government.

"The Principal Working Meetings (MKKS) of private and public SMA / SMA, they submitted a number of suggestions, including details of costs that the Surabaya City Government (Pemkot) could help. The goal is that high school / equivalent children do not drop out of school," said Eri, during a meeting with MKKS for private and public SMA/SMK in Surabaya, Monday, August 15.

This meeting, continued Eri, also followed up on his meeting with the Governor of East Java Khofifah Indar Parawansa some time ago. Where the Surabaya City Government wants to provide tuition assistance to high school students with the status of low-income people (MBR) with Surabaya ID cards.

This is because until now there are still high school students who have not been able to pay tuition fees, even though there are School Operational Assistance (BOS) funds, as well as Regional Education Operational Assistance (Bopda) which are covered by the East Java Provincial Government. Therefore, he said, the City Government will be here to help.

"I have also conveyed this to the Governor's Mother, how can the city government work together to help the Suroboyo people so they don't mind paying their tuition fees. He said we can help there," he said.

Meanwhile, in a meeting with the MKKS for public and private SMA/SMK, Eri admitted that he had conveyed that every school must have a minimum standard, so that later the amount of BOS and Bopda could be calculated per student. The rest that has not been covered will be borne by the Surabaya City Government.

"In the end, we hope that students will no longer think about tuition fees, because the city government has already covered it," he said.

Eri Cahyadi asked the MKKS for public and private SMA/SMK to immediately complete the minimum standard of SMA/SMK equivalent. After that was done, Eri made sure that he would convey it to Khofifah, so that they could sit down together to solve the problem.

"So, the provincial government has received the green light regarding this educational assistance. In fact, the Governor's Mother has also agreed that there must be a minimum standard for a high school / vocational school of the equivalent," he said.

In addition, Eri also ensured that his party would ask for assistance from Unair and the Prosecutor's Office in the success of this education cost assistance program. This is done so that they do not make mistakes from a legal standpoint.

"This is the time for us to join hands to educate the nation's life, there is no other purpose than to eradicate school dropouts in Surabaya," he said.

If all these processes are completed, Eri Cahyadi hopes that starting the new school year, the education assistance for SMA/SMK equivalent from the MBR can be disbursed.

"God willing, we will start the new school year," he said.
