BELITUNG - The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) supports the management of tin ore mining that is environmentally friendly or does not cause damage for the benefit of the community in a sustainable manner.
"Mining can still be carried out as long as it does not cause damage but for the welfare of the people," said Deputy Secretary General of the MUI who also serves as Special Staff of the Indonesian Vice President KH. Ikhsan Abdullah, as reported by Antara in Tanjung Pandan, Belitung, Sunday, August 14.
This was conveyed in the MUI Fatwa Review Discussion Group Forum (FGD) with the theme "Solutions to Preserve the Natural Environment of the Rainbow Troops in the Framework of Himayatul Ummah" held by MUI Belitung.
According to him, MUI has issued Fatwa No. 22 of 2011 concerning Environmentally Friendly Mining on May 26, 2011.
He explained in the fatwa it was stated that mining activities may be carried out as long as they are for the benefit of the public, do not cause damage, and are environmentally friendly.
"Mining activities that do not comply with the requirements and do not bring prosperity to the surrounding community are illegal," he said.
He added that the Bangka Belitung Islands Province is known as a tin ore producing area so this wealth must be managed properly for the welfare of the people.
"I think that Allah SWT created Bangka Belitung when he was smiling because of the potential for natural wealth and other superior commodities," he said.
He said that in creating environmentally friendly tin ore mining, an application of technology is needed.
"Ijtihad is that we use technology whether we like it or not because if it is exploited blindly continuously, it will run out, so there must be sustainability," he said.
He recommended that the stakeholders in the granting of mining land should be limited, selective, and equitable which is solely for the welfare of the general public.
"The role of MUI as himayatul ummah must continue to educate about this. Da'wah regarding saving the environment is currently a priority," he said.
