KENDARI - A shallow earthquake with a depth of 10 kilometers rocked the Kendari region, Southeast Sulawesi. There have been no reports of the impact of this earthquake.

The Kendari Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the Kendari earthquake occurred at 22:39 WITA, Tuesday, August 9.

Head of Kendari Geophysics Station, Rudin, said the 3.6 magnitude earthquake was located at coordinates 4.08 South Latitude, 122.63 East Longitude or precisely located on land at a distance of 6.7 km southwest of North Moramo, South Konawe Regency, Southeast Sulawesi Province.

"By taking into account the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a shallow type of earthquake due to the activity of the Kendari Fault, Central Segment in the Southwest of North Moramo, South Konawe Regency," he said as quoted by ANTARA.

The BMKG said the earthquake shocks were reported to have been felt in Konawe, Kendari and South Konawe districts.

Even so, he said, until now his party had not received any reports of the impact of the damage caused by the earthquake.

"The modeling results show that the earthquake does not have the potential for a tsunami. As of 23.00 WITA, the results of BMKG monitoring show that aftershocks have not occurred," he said.

BMKG appealed to the public to remain calm and not be influenced by issues that cannot be justified. In addition, it avoids buildings that are cracked or damaged by the earthquake.

"Check and make sure the building where you live is earthquake-resistant enough, or there is no damage due to earthquake vibrations that endanger the stability of the building before you return to the house," said Rudin.

Sherlinawati (27) a resident of Jalan PDAM, Rahandouna Village, Poasia District, Kendari, was shocked because the objects in her kitchen vibrated. "I was surprised that the earthquake was strong, my cousin and I immediately left the house because we were afraid, don't let anything happen. It was around 10 o'clock after the earthquake," he said by telephone.
