JEMBER - The Head of the Water Police Unit of the Jember Resort Police AKP M. Na'i said one fisherman died and two other fishermen were injured due to a marine accident in the southern sea waters of Jember Regency, East Java.

"A jukung boat carrying a captain and two fishermen was overturned by waves as high as 2 meters in the waters of Plawangan Puger," he said as reported by ANTARA, Monday, August 1.

According to him, the victim who died was the captain named Hanafi (50), a resident of Pugerkulon Village, Puger District, who suffered a bleeding wound on the head, so he died at the scene of the accident.

"Two fishermen who survived, namely Ahmad Nur (55) and Agil Jubran (17), both residents of Pugerkulon Village who suffered injuries to the head, legs, and hands, are still being treated at the Puger Health Center," he said.

He explained the chronology of the incident, the three victims were using a jukung type boat with the words "Aliya" going to sea looking for fish and when they arrived in the waters of Plawangan Puger, suddenly a big wave came with a height of 2 meters.

"The jukung was hit by the waves, so it overturned and hit the breakwater in Plawangan Puger. The three victims were swept away around the location," he said.

Residents who knew about the incident immediately contacted the Satpolair Office for assistance and evacuated the three victims of the capsized boat.

"We immediately gave help, but one person who was also the boat captain died because he was swept away by a breakwater and two crew members survived," he said.

Na'i explained that all the victims were successfully evacuated and the two survivors were also rushed to the Puger Health Center for help due to their injuries.

"We urge fishermen to increase their vigilance against the threat of high waves when fishing and are advised not to go to sea during bad weather for their own safety," he said.
