YOGYAKARTA - The Yogyakarta City Government is still waiting for the results of the facilitation of the Yogyakarta Mayor's Regulation regarding the operation of electric scooters or scooters and other similar vehicles at the Ministry of Home Affairs before the regulation is enacted and enforced.

"The draft mayoral regulation has been submitted to the law bureau to be forwarded to the Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri). Now we are still waiting for the results from the ministry," said Yogyakarta Acting Mayor Sumadi in Yogyakarta, Antara, Thursday, July 28.

According to him, the process at the Ministry of Home Affairs takes quite a long time because the ministry does not only facilitate regulatory products from the Yogyakarta City Government.

“There are many draft regulations from other local governments throughout Indonesia that must also be processed at the Ministry of Home Affairs. Therefore, this process takes time," he said.

Nevertheless, Sumadi hopes that the process at the Ministry of Home Affairs can be completed within a maximum of two weeks. "Hopefully, there will be results in August for later implementation," he said.

A number of rules for the operation of electric scooters or scooters in the city of Yogyakarta, Sumadi continued, referring to the Minister of Transportation Regulation Number 45 of 2020.

"The main rule refers to the ministry's regulation, which is prohibited from being used on roads but it is still possible to use it in housing or office areas," he said.

Meanwhile, in the philosophical axis area of Yogyakarta, namely Jalan Margo Utomo, Jalan Margo Mulyo and Jalan Malioboro, there are additional rules in the form of a ban on the operation of scooters or electric scooters on sidewalks because they are considered to be disturbing pedestrians.

“In addition, the electric scooter used can be driven up to 25 km/hour. It's fast enough that it's considered dangerous," he said.

Previously, the Head of the Technical Implementation Unit of the Yogyakarta Cultural Heritage Area, Ekwanto said, he was trying optimally to ensure that no electric scooters or scooters were operating in the philosophy axis area.

"There have been a lot of banners banning electric scooters being put up," he said, noting that there were quite a number of tourists who complained because they were disturbed by the operation of electric scooters.
