ENDE - A resident in Nuaone Village, Ende Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province (NTT) handed over a protected Flores eagle (Spizaetus Floris) to the Natural Resources Conservation Center (BBKSDA) after it was found entangled in a wild boar.

Head of the Kelimutu National Park (TN) Hendrikus Rani Siga said that the Flores eagle is a type of bird of prey or raptor. "This bird is an endemic bird owned by Indonesia, especially in Flores," he said when contacted from Kupang, Antara, Thursday, July 27.

This Flores eagle, he said, is now threatened with extinction because its population is estimated not to exceed 250 so it is included in the red list (IUCN Redlist) as Critically Endangered (critical).

He explained that based on the testimony of residents who discovered that the snares were the ones he set to catch wild boars in his garden.

But when examining the snare it hit the eagle. With the awareness of the community, Hendrikus considered that the people in the area had begun to realize that these animals were protected.

So far, he said, socialization continues to be carried out sporadically by Kelimutu National Park officers who are in resorts in every village supporting the area.

"The bird will later be released back into the wild," he said.

For the Kelimutu National Park area itself, there are now 13 Flores eagles recorded and their presence is always monitored, said Hendrikus Rani Siga.
