Malaysia Condemns Death Sentences For Four Myanmar Democracy Activists

JAKARTA - The Malaysian government condemns the execution of the Myanmar junta's execution of four democracy activists and considers it a crime against humanity.

"Malaysia condemns the execution of four democracy activists by the junta. This is a crime against humanity and clearly shows that the junta is mocking the 5PC (5 points ASEAN Consensus)," Malaysian Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah said via Twitter. .

On July 22, Saifuddin said the cabinet decided on two important issues, that Myanmar was not allowed to send political representatives to all ASEAN ministerial meetings, and the need for a framework with a clear end goal to implement the Five-Point Consensus.

The ultimate goal is a democratic, inclusive, just, peaceful, harmonious and prosperous Myanmar whose civil and political rights are guaranteed by the Constitution.

ASEAN, according to Saifuddin, must cooperate with the UN Secretary General's Special Envoy Dr Noeleen Heyzer and the international community, to resolve the issue.

The executions come less than two weeks after the ASEAN Chair's Special Envoy to Myanmar, Cambodian Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn, visited Myanmar and just about a week before the ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting in Phnom Penh on Aug. 3.

"We see it as if the junta is making fun of the ASEAN 5PC and I think we need to take this matter seriously," he said.

ASEAN on Tuesday also issued a strong rebuke to the execution by Myanmar's ruling military against the country's democratic activities, calling it a "deeply despicable act".

Cambodia as ASEAN Chair currently issued a release that the execution of the death penalty was only a week before the 55th ASEAN ministerial meeting, and the act was very despicable. It also shows the junta's lack of will to support the Five Points Consensus.
