Coordinating Minister For Human Development And Culture Intensifies The Planting Of 10 Million Trees For Disaster Mitigation

MAKASSAR - Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture (Menko PMK) Muhadjir Effendy intensified the planting of 10 million trees as disaster mitigation which this time was held in Makassar, South Sulawesi.

As a Real Action for the National Mental Revolution Movement, Muhadjir Effendy directly led the movement to plant 10 million trees which was held at Hasanuddin University, Makassar, Tuesday, July 26.

Muhadjir said this activity was a follow-up to the international meeting of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) from 163 countries which discussed disaster or efforts to reduce disasters, including global warming.

"That's why we make sustainable programs such as planting 10 million trees and this is a follow-up," he said as quoted by ANTARA.

According to the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, tree planting is an investment for the future by building a mental awareness of disaster mitigation and care for the environment.

Not only that, planting fruit trees in particular, is also an effort to build food security as well as an additional instrument for stunting reduction.

This activity was spearheaded by four universities, namely the University of North Sumatra (USU), Surakarta State University (UNS), Hasanuddin University (Unhas), and the Agung Tirtayasa University. It is hoped that similar activities will be followed by other universities.

"I appeal to all rectors and all students, especially students who love nature, to socialize the movement to plant 10 million trees in order to prevent global warming," said Muhadjir

In this movement, Muhadjir also said that the planting of 10 million trees should not be limited to the act of planting, but that their maintenance must also continue.

"After this, don't just let it wilt, it must be guarded and nurtured so that later we can reap it," said the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture.

The Ministry of Environment and Forestry and the Ministry of Agriculture continue to provide support in the form of ready-to-plant seeds.

This time, planting activities were supported by 2,500 seedlings distributed from the Maros Region Forest Plant Seedling Center, South Sulawesi. Several types of plants planted are mahogany, ebony and fruit trees.

Meanwhile, the Chancellor of Hasanuddin University, Jamaluddin Jompa, said that his party would be committed to continuing the tree planting movement on campus, as well as in the community.

“As a big family of Unhas and the people of South Sulawesi, we are honored to be a part of the process of completing 10 million trees. In the future, we will continue to support and preserve the culture of planting trees not only in Unhas but also in various cities in South Sulawesi," he said.
