JAKARTA - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported that two shipping industry security officers died in the wreckage of a security post building that collapsed in strong winds.

The incident due to extreme weather occurred in Pangke Village, West Meral District, Karimun Regency, Riau Islands.

"In addition to Pangke Village, a similar phenomenon also occurred in Pongkar Village, Tebing District. The extreme weather marked by rain accompanied by strong winds had damaged 43 housing units, of which 4 units were seriously damaged," said the Acting Head of the Center. Visual data received by the Operations and Control Center (Pusdalops) of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) from the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Karimun Regency, several houses belonging to 43 families were damaged from the walls to the roof. Some houses even collapsed to the ground.

"As an effort to accelerate the post-disaster handling, the Karimun Regency BPBD together with relevant agencies have gone to the affected locations for assessments and assisting with the recovery and cleaning of building debris," he said.

Cloudy weather to light rain still has the potential to occur in the Karimun Regency area on Thursday (21/7) until tonight, according to the weather forecast by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

BNPB appealed to all regional policy makers together with the community to increase vigilance and preparedness.

Mitigation efforts such as trimming twigs and tree branches, monitoring and controlling billboards or billboards, strengthening the structure of houses and buildings, rearranging power cables and communication networks and providing socialization to the community can be carried out periodically.

In addition, to reduce the risk of other hydrometeorological disasters such as floods and landslides, mitigation efforts such as normalizing rivers, riverbanks, cleaning rivers from garbage blockages, socializing to the community and monitoring weather developments must be carried out regularly.

BNPB also appealed to people living around cliff slopes and riverbanks to increase their vigilance. If it rains with high intensity with a duration of more than one hour, it is advised to temporarily evacuate independently to a safer location.
