JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Politics, Law and Human Rights (Menko Polhukam) Mahfud MD emphasized that radicalism and terrorism are enemies of the state and must be fought against.

"Radicalism is the root of terrorism. It is an enemy of the state, an enemy of the nation, and an enemy of all circles. So all parties must work together to prevent and fight radicalism," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, July 19.

The Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs spoke at the "Presidential Lectures" activity in commemoration of the BNPT's 12th Anniversary with the theme "Invigorating National Synergy in Preventing Intolerance, Radicalism, and Terrorism Towards Harmonious Indonesia".

Mahfud explained that the establishment of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia was the result of the noble agreement of the founders of the country. The agreement is different but one, namely Pancasila as the basis of the state.

"So it's a noble agreement to accept the differences that are the roots of the founding of the country. This noble agreement cannot be annulled," he said.

Meanwhile, radicalism, said Mahfud, aims to change the country from its roots, so it is clear that radicalism aims to replace Pancasila.

According to Mahfud, radicalism is something that is dangerous which will bring up three things, namely intolerance, rolling out a counter discourse to change the basis of the state, and terrorism.

"These three things already exist in Indonesia and they are very dangerous," he said.

He explained that intolerance is manifested in an attitude that does not want to accept differences. While it is very clear the country stands on a united agreement in differences.

In addition, he said, the ideological discourse to change Pancasila was carried out by radical groups where the group had infiltrated various sectors, including education.

"Terrorism is violence that creates massive fear," he said.

The head of the National Counter-Terrorism Agency (BNPT) Komjen Boy Rafli Amar stated that the establishment of the BNPT was a mandate given by Law Number 5 of 2018 concerning the Eradication of Criminal Acts of Terrorism.

"The task of BNPT is to formulate, coordinate, implement strategic policies and national programs to counter terrorism," he said.

Boy Rafli said the tasks include national preparedness, counter-radicalization, deradicalization, and international cooperation.

He said coordinating between law enforcement agencies in countering terrorism. BNPT does not act as a law enforcement officer, but rather coordinates officers in the field of "criminal justice system" so that counter-terrorism programs can be more effective.

"Of course, a spirit of synergy and collaboration is needed because radicalism and terrorism are our common enemies," said Boy.
