MEDAN - The City Government (Pemkot) of Medan, North Sumatra, has opened public road access which has been covered by illegal buildings for 18 years at Jalan Aman, Cinta Damai Village, Medan Helvetia.

"We will control the illegal buildings in a persuasive manner," said Head of the Medan City Public Works Agency, Topan Obaja Putra Ginting, as quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, July 19.

To fulfill the aspirations of the residents of Neighborhoods 1 and 2 in Cinta Damai Village, he explained, his party started work on opening this public road access some time ago and constructing drainage.

Monitoring at the location is currently ongoing drainage work, both right and left of the road along 207 meters with a depth of 60 centimeters.

"Not only roads, we also make drainage to drain water that can disturb road users. We make drainage along the roads that we will asphalt," said Topan.

According to the plan, continued Topan, after the drainage construction is completed, the next stage is to pave the 207-meter-long Safe Road.

The Village Head of Cinta Damai Syena Christy Septiana Sitegar admitted that the illegal construction of semi-permanent houses that blocked the access to public roads caused the road to become narrow because there was only one meter left.

"The person concerned has occupied the house since 2004 according to the signed agreement. The head of the neighborhood, the village head is not known, and there is no date on the letter," he explained.

Maharis Siahaan, a resident of Jalan Aman, welcomed the fact that the Medan City Government had fulfilled the people's wishes and thanked Medan Mayor Bobby Nasution.

"We have been waiting for this public road access for a long time, and it turns out that at this time our new wish can be realized," he said.
