After Harassment Case, DKI Provincial Government Considers Women's Special Public Transport

JAKARTA - Head of the DKI Jakarta Transportation Agency, Syafrin Liputo, said that his party was considering a number of efforts to prevent sexual harassment on public transportation. One of them is the plan to procure urban transportation (angkot) specifically for women.

This was done in response to cases of alleged sexual harassment in public transportation some time ago.

"DKI Jakarta Transportation Agency will make comprehensive regulations for angkot and public transportation in Jakarta, including further reviewing ideas related to angkot or microtrans specifically for women," Syafrin told reporters, Wednesday, July 13.

In addition, Syafrin also requires every public transportation in Jakarta to put a sticker showing the emergency number as a complaint of harassment, 112, in a place that is clearly visible to all passengers.

The DKI Provincial Government will also refine the current SOP regarding handling emergencies, to adapt to the needs of preventing and handling incidents of harassment, by prioritizing the protection of victims.

"We ensure that all drivers, station staff, or public transportation officers understand their respective SOPs through socialization, education, and training," he said.

Another plan is that the DKI Provincial Government will utilize technology by installing CCTV and a ticketing system based on face recognition. However, this will still be studied further.

Previously, the DKI Jakarta Transportation Agency planned to separate male and female angkot passenger seats. It is planned that male passengers will sit in the right row of seats with a capacity of six people and female passengers will sit on the left with a capacity of four people.

The separation of seats for passengers of different sexes arose after a case of sexual harassment on an angkot majoring in M-44, the Tebet-Kuningan route, which went viral some time ago. Apparently, this plan has drawn criticism from a number of parties and the Transportation Agency has finally canceled the plan.
