JAKARTA - Secretary General of the PDI-P (PDIP) Hasto Kristiyanto said political parties in Indonesia must carry out the function of education and regeneration. Do not let political parties rely solely on electoral matters to win the general election (election).

This was conveyed by Hasto Kristiyanto in the International Seminar on the theme of Political Parties and Democracy: The Role of Political Parties in Promoting Justice and World Peace. This activity was held in Yogyakarta online and offline, Monday, July 4.

Initially, Hasto said that education and regeneration in the party were often hampered because of the electoral political system. The system emerged because there was a shift in the democratic system in Indonesia since 1998.

In that year, Indonesia followed the political style in the United States which made the party win the election. In fact, each political party should prioritize science and technology, research and innovation in order to play a role for all parties.

"This trend, liberal democracy and electoral democracy, has made the regeneration of political parties not carried out properly, so that political parties are unable to provide incentives for political education and leadership regeneration," said Hasto as quoted from his written statement, Monday, July 4.

This condition then made PDIP become restless. Thus, changes in the political system and paradigm should be carried out.

Intellectual traditions, continued Hasto, including educating cadres must be carried out. Moreover, the founders of the nation used to join political parties with high intellectual abilities, not just wanting to do politics.

"With this tradition, intellectual leadership understands the future direction, but is grounded in the nation's main issues," he said.

Hasto reminded that politics is not just trying and making rhetoric. There are various things to do including enhancing the intellectual tradition.

"That's why entering a political party is not by trial and error and then based on rhetoric," said Hasto.

"Participating in the future must begin with an intellectual tradition. Because then leadership will be built with fighting power to know the future direction," he concluded.
