JAKARTA - A young man was judged by a mob after he was caught stealing money from the Musala Nurul Hidayah charity box in Nurul Hidayah Gang, RT 06/10, Cibubur Village, East Jakarta.
Umar Dani (58), one of the administrators of the prayer room, confirmed the case of the theft of the charity box. Umar said, his son knew exactly what had happened.
"When it happened, it was my son who knew, my son had not slept. Then he saw someone in the prayer room opening the charity box," Umar told reporters at the location, Sunday, July 3.
Umar said that the door of the prayer room was not locked so that residents could easily enter to worship. However, this is actually used by perpetrators who do not have identity cards, to steal money from charity boxes.
When caught, continued Umar by his son and then surrounded by masses. The perpetrator, aged around 20 years, was judged by residents. The incident occurred on Friday, July 1, at approximately 22.30 WIB.
Umar said, the perpetrators amounted to one person. Because, when the residents were interrogated regarding the theft, the answer was not clear. The suspect is believed to be in a drunken state.
"The perpetrator was really drunk, so when asked, the answer was unclear, wishy-washy. He said he had medicine in his pocket, but he didn't know what medicine it was," he said.
The witness said, when the perpetrator was caught, the money from the charity box was scattered on the floor.
"Indeed, there is evidence that he opened the charity box and the money was scattered. The money taken was Rp. 315 thousand. When he was in action, he brought a key and a screwdriver," he said.
After being judged by the mob, the perpetrator was immediately taken into custody by the local environmental management and Bhabinkamtibmas and Babinsa in the area to the Ciracas Police Headquarters.
Ciracas Police Chief Kompol Jupriono confirmed the theft of the Musala Nurul Hidayah charity box. He said the perpetrator was homeless and did not have an identity card.
"After the inspection, there was no identity and there were no homeless people," he said, Sunday, July 3.
He said the perpetrator did not carry illegal drugs. However, Jupriono admitted that the perpetrator was in a drunken state.
"No, there is no (drugs)," he said.
Kompol Jupriono said the perpetrators had indeed been judged by the masses.
"He was judged, but it wasn't too bad because he was immediately detained by Bhabinkamtibmas," he said.
He continued, because the stolen money was below a nominal value of Rp. 2.5 million, according to the laws and regulations, the perpetrators could not be arrested. Finally, continued Jupriono, the perpetrator was taken to a social institution in the Cipayung area, East Jakarta to be given guidance.
Moreover, the perpetrator does not have a home or is homeless.
"Because what was taken was only Rp. 300 thousand and the DKM (Mass Prosperity Council) also did not want to make a police report," he said.
