JAKARTA - The Riau Provincial Government will immediately receive 4,200 doses of the oral and nail disease (PMK) vaccine to reduce the rate of spread of FMD that attacks cattle in the area.

"If we look at the current PMK case, as many as 4,200 doses of the vaccine are considered sufficient for the vaccination needs of livestock in Riau," said Head of the Riau PMK Task Force Handling Edy Afrizal to the media in Pekanbaru, Friday, June 24.

He said the 4,200 doses of vaccine were part of the 800,000 doses of vaccine for 19 provinces throughout Indonesia that were confirmed positive for FMD attacks on livestock.

Furthermore, after the delivery of the 4,200 doses of cow vaccine, there will be another vaccine delivery in stages as needed.

"In the near future, there will be an additional procurement of 1 or 2.2 million doses of vaccine nationally which will also be immediately redistributed according to the needs of each region," he said quoted from Antara.

He explained that FMD was caused by a type A virus from the Picornaviridae family, the Apthovirus genus, namely Aphtaee epizootecae.

The incubation period of the disease is 1-14 days, which is the period from when the animal is infected with the disease until symptoms appear. This virus can last a long time in the environment and survives in bones, glands, milk, and dairy products.

This morbidity rate can reach 100 percent and the high mortality rate is in young animals or children.

The FMD transmission rate is quite high, but the mortality rate is only 1-5 percent. Symptoms of livestock affected by FMD are looking weak, lethargic, limping legs, excessive salivation, not wanting to eat and mouth blisters.
