BKSAP DPR: Indonesia Must Be A Bridge For Russia-Ukraine Peace

Gilang hopes that the Indonesian government can bridge Russia and Ukraine to make peace.

“Indonesia must be a bridge of peace for Russia and Ukraine, which are in conflict. As a country that has lofty ideals, we must be actively involved in realizing world peace,” said Gilang, Thursday, June 23.

According to Gilang, the peace diplomacy step is in line with Indonesia's free and active policy. Moreover, Indonesia holds the G20 presidency this year. "Indonesia has an important role as a mediator for its member countries, including partner countries," he explained.

Gilang said the prolonged conflict between Russia and Ukraine had an impact on humanitarian issues and a global crisis that needed to find a way out immediately. In fact, he said, a number of countries have experienced energy and economic crises due to Russia's policies in the aftermath of its conflict with Ukraine.

"Peace between the two countries must be achieved because it has affected global economic and food conditions," said Gilang.

Therefore, the DPR's BKSAP encourages President Jokowi's meeting with the President of Russia and the President of Ukraine to fight for a ceasefire for the two countries. Gilang said the DPR itself also continues to try to bridge the conflict between Russia and Ukraine through parliamentary diplomacy.

“The conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to cause humanitarian casualties, which cannot be tolerated. As a country that upholds humanitarian principles, Indonesia cannot remain silent," he said.

The legislator from the Central Java II electoral district added that the DPR also continues to seek to establish communication with the two countries through parliamentary diplomacy. Where BKSAP continues to coordinate with the parliaments of friendly countries.

"This includes international forums such as the 8th Group of 20 Parliamentary Speakers Summit (P20) considering that the DPR will be the host," added Gilang.

However, this member of Commission III of the DPR reminded the government to continue to maintain Indonesia's neutral position. Indonesia must also prioritize the promotion of a peaceful resolution in the face of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

“We must also think about the position of friendly countries involved in the Russia-Ukraine dispute. Don't let our good intentions actually harm the nation itself," he said.

Gilang assessed that Indonesia must remain wise in its efforts to create world peace. As stated in the Preamble to the 1945 Constitution.

“As part of the world community, it is a must for Indonesia to play an active role in world peace. But Indonesia's free and active international politics must also be prioritized," he said.
