MATARAM - The Search and Rescue (SAR) team managed to find the body of a resident of West Nusa Tenggara who was the victim of a ship carrying 30 Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) which had an accident in Batam waters, Riau Islands.
Head of the Technical Implementation Unit of the Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection Agency (UPT BP2MI) NTB Abri Danar Prabawa, in Mataram, Wednesday, said the victim's body was found by the Singapore Coast Guard on Wednesday (21/6) evening 2022, at 21.15 WIB.
"The Tanjung Pinang SAR office then received information from the Singapore Coast Guard that the body of one of the victims of the missing ship accident in the waters of Putri Nongsa Island, Batam, had been found," he said as quoted by Antara, Wednesday, June 22.
He said the victim died in the name of Lalu Ahmat Sapii alias Mat (38), a resident of Tumpak Village, Pujut District, Central Lombok Regency, NTB.
Certainty regarding the identity of the corpse is based on the discovery of documents in the victim's name, namely a resident identity card (KTP), a driver's license (SIM), and an overseas worker card (KTKLN) which are no longer valid.
The authorities have also investigated the 23 victims from NTB who survived, indeed the bodies found were their friends who were declared missing.
"BP2MI has coordinated with the Directorate for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens and Indonesian Legal Entities, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to coordinate the handling of the bodies by the Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia in Singapore," he said.
A ship carrying 30 illegal PMIs bound for Malaysia had an accident in the sea waters of Putri Island, Batam, Riau Archipelago, on Thursday (16/6), at around 19.30 WIB.
Of the 30 ship passengers who became victims, 23 people have been rescued. All of the PMIs that were rescued came entirely from NTB, and are now at the Batam Naval Base Command Headquarters.
Until now, the SAR team in the Riau Archipelago is still searching for six victims who are still missing.
