JAKARTA - The Indonesian Anti-Corruption Society (MAKI) will immediately coordinate with the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK) to provide a sense of security to victims and witnesses. This is done so that victims and witnesses can provide information without having to be afraid of being the perpetrators of giving bribes.

"LPSK will usually provide maximum security protection for witnesses who are victims of alleged extortion whose alleged perpetrators have a higher position or power," said the Coordinator of the Indonesian Anti-Corruption Society (MAKI), Boyamin Saiman, Sunday, June 19.

MAKI will continue to oversee extortion cases to uncover bigger ones.

"This case is an effort to uncover cases of extortion that are bigger and more widespread," he said.

Previously, the DKI Jakarta High Prosecutor's Office on June 17, 2022 had stepped up to the investigation stage regarding reports from MAKI on cases of alleged extortion by unscrupulous officials at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, in particular against officials from prisons and detention centers.

MAKI hopes that the next stage in the form of pre-prosecution and/or prosecution at the Tipikor District Court can be accelerated.

"MAKI will continue to oversee this case, including backing up efforts for a pretrial lawsuit if it stalls and drags on. This case should be processed quickly because the evidence submitted is strong and more than sufficient, namely the alleged evidence of money transfers through bank accounts," he said.

The disclosure of the alleged extortion case is also to increase the courage of the victim to open the case that happened to him.

"So far, many victims of extortion are afraid to open their cases because of the threat that the victim will be sentenced to prison by giving bribes," he said.

According to him, extortionists usually feel safe because they believe that the victim will not dare to reveal the case, because it will be easy to break it with the pattern that the victim is also involved in the form of giving bribes.

"The perpetrators of extortion have too often covered the mouth of the victim with a bluff. The victim will usually withdraw his statement if he gets a bluff and will be subject to the status of a bribe giver," he said.

Previously reported, the Indonesian Anti-Corruption Society (MAKI) reported allegations of illegal levies (extortion) carried out by unscrupulous officials from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham) against employees or officials in detention centers or correctional institutions in Indonesian territory.

"Maki has submitted a public complaint to the DKI Jakarta High Prosecutor's Office for alleged extortion and or illegal levies allegedly carried out by GD, a former echelon III of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights," said MAKI Coordinator Boyamin Saiman in Jakarta, Wednesday, June 14.

According to Boyamin, the alleged person who was reported, while serving in echelon III at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, was suspected of carrying out illegal levies with various modes, such as allegedly asking for deposit money from prison/prison officials in Indonesia.

The suspect offered a position or helped to remain in his original position by asking for a sum of money from echelon IV officials of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights.

"The suspect is suspected of carrying out his actions by scaring the employees, if they do not follow their wishes, they will be moved to a remote area," said Boyamin.
