JAKARTA - The House of Representatives as the host of the 8th G20 Parliamentary Speakers' Summit (P20) will officially open the series of meetings of the parliamentary chair of the G20 countries on June 15, 2022 tomorrow.
The chairman of the DPR, Puan Maharani, will open the event by being the keynote speaker at the P20 Kickoff Meeting which will be held in Surabaya, East Java.
"In line with the strength of the Government of Indonesia in the G20 with the theme 'Recover Together, Recover Stronger', the DPR emphasizes the role of parliament in post-pandemic recovery through the theme 'Stronger Parliament for Sustainable Recovery'," said Puan, Tuesday, June 14.
According to Puan, this theme will be the subject of discussion by the chairmen of the G20 parliament at the P20 event. There are four priority issues that will be discussed in the P20 forum later, namely sustainable development and a green economy, an inclusive economy and a strong society, an effective parliament and strong democracy, as well as gender equality and women's empowerment.
"Recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic has become a global issue that is not only echoed by G20 countries. In the context of development, the recovery agenda brings a spirit of building back better,” said the first woman who served as Chair of the DPR.
“This means that recovery carries a mission for building a stronger and more solid future. At the same time, the global commitment to recover together has become the agenda of discussion in various multilateral parliamentary forums as a representative institution that has a crucial role in bridging public interests,” he continued.
The P20 Kickoff Meeting as the opening of a series of meetings ahead of the P20 Summit on 6-7 October, will be attended by Ambassadors of G20 countries and invited countries. The event will be held in a hybrid manner in the form of presentation forums from resource persons and discussions with academics.
P20 is a parliamentary forum of G20 countries which is held in a series of G20 Summits. In addition to holding the G20 presidency for the first time, Indonesia is also the host for the multilateral forum.
Puan said the P20 forum was an effort by the DPR to build synergy and collaboration with relevant stakeholders who were part of the G20.
Puan also explained that Indonesia's strength in the P20 had three goals. The aim is to increase the parliamentary dimension to support global agendas, and to encourage closer interaction and cooperation between the government and parliament in implementing the results of the G20 meeting.
"And strengthen the interaction between the Chair of the Parliament of the G20 countries and partner countries as well as cooperation with the United Nations and other international organizations," concluded Puan.
In addition to attending Kickoff P20 in Surabaya, the former Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture will also make a working visit (kunker) in a number of areas in East Java. This time Puan's work visits are in Surabaya, Pasuruan, Mojokerto, and Magetan.
Puan is scheduled to visit the homes of the Beneficiary Families (KPM) of the Family Hope Program (PKH) in Surabaya, then continue to visit the Dairy Cattle Farm Cooperative in Pasuruan.
For the second day of work in East Java on Thursday (16/6), Puan will visit agriculture in Mojokerto. The Kunker then continued in Magetan to visit the elderly's house, the Extraordinary Elementary School, and have a dialogue with the residents of Karang Rejo.
"This working visit is in order to listen to the aspirations of the community to be channeled through the functions of legislation, supervision and budgeting which are the authority of the DPR," said Puan.
