Mount Ile Lewotolok Erupts Again With A Smoke Height Of 1,000 Meters

KUPANG - Ile Lewotolok Volcano in Lembata Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) has erupted again with smoke heights reaching 1,000 meters in the last six hours.

"From 06.00 WITA to 12.00 WITA, there was one eruption with smoke heights ranging from 500-1000 meters," said Head of the Mount Ile Lewotolok Monitoring Post, Stanis Ara Kian, as quoted by Antara, Monday, June 13.

He said visually during the six hours, there were 12 eruptions with eruption heights ranging from 300-500 meters and the color of white-gray smoke. "The eruption was accompanied by a boom and a weak rumble," he said.

When viewed from the seismicity, he continued, the non-harmonic tremor was 23 times with a duration of 84 to 237 seconds.

Meanwhile, for deep volcanic earthquakes, there is one time with a duration of 6.8 seconds. Meanwhile, Continuous Tremor (Microtremor) was recorded with an amplitude of 0.5 mm (dominantly 0.5 mm).

Stanis added that based on the results of a thorough analysis and evaluation on June 8, 2022, the activity level of the Ile Lewotolok volcano was still at Level III or on alert with new recommendations tailored to the latest potential hazard threats.

In the Level III activity level, the community around Mount Ili Lewotolok as well as visitors, climbers or tourists are asked not to carry out activities within a 3 km radius from the peak or crater of the mountain.

Then a radius of 3.5 km for the southeast sector, a radius of 4 km for the east and northeast sectors. The people of Lamawolo, Lamatokan, and Jontona villages should always be aware of the potential threat of avalanches of incandescent lava and hot clouds from the eastern part of the peak or crater of the mountain.

He said the last few days there had been heavy rain and quite a lot of intensity in several locations in the area.

"People who live around the river that ends at the top of the mountain are to be aware of the potential threat of lahars, especially during the rainy season," he said.
