JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (Menkopolhukam) Mahfud MD said Indonesia is a pluralist country that has complied with state rules according to Islamic jurisprudence, so that it is already legally valid.

"Indonesia is a product of the ijtihad of the ulama after the struggle and is already legal according to sharia," Mahfud said in his statement quoted by Antara, Sunday, June 12.

He emphasized that Indonesia is not a religious country, but a country based on God Almighty, where all religions and adherents of religion are protected to worship.

"The Indonesian state according to Islamic jurisprudence has fulfilled state rules, namely maintaining and protecting religion, maintaining the safety of the souls of its citizens, maintaining rights to property, maintaining purity of mind, and maintaining the sanctity of offspring," Mahfud explained during a lecture and dialogue at the Al-Ikhlash Mosque in Amsterdam, Saturday 11 June.

Therefore, he continued, Indonesian people in foreign countries and their diaspora groups, especially in the Netherlands, must have a sense of love and responsibility to the nation and protect the Indonesian state with all its ideologies.

Mahfud MD held a meeting and dialogue with the community and the Indonesian diaspora in Amsterdam, precisely at the Indonesian cultural center (Indonesisch Cultureel Centrum), where there is the Al-Ikhlash Mosque managed by the European Student and Student Association (PPME) Amsterdam.

Quoting Imam Al Ghazali, Mahfud said religion and state are twin brothers, so both will not happen if one of them is not true.

According to him, even Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) states that the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia is a darul mitsaq or an agreed state, while Muhammadiyah says that the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia is a darul ahdi wa al syahadah or a state resulting from an agreement and a place to fill in with development based on differences.

Thus, he is of the view that a state based on Pancasila is already legally valid, it is the same as the Medina Charter at the time of the Prophet Muhammad.

"In terms of state fiqh, Indonesia is a pluralistic country because God created different people; and if we are united, God willing, Indonesia will prosper," he said.
