5.2 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Trenggalek, Vibrations Can Be Felt To Yogyakarta And Cilacap

JAKARTA - An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 occurred on the South Coast of Trenggalek, East Java, on Sunday, June 12, 2022, at around 06.55 western Indonesia time.

The Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Bambang Setiyo Prayitno, said the earthquake did not have the potential for a tsunami.

"The modeling results show that this earthquake does not have the potential for a tsunami," said Bambang through a press release from the BMKG, Jakarta, Sunday.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located at coordinates 8.60° South Latitude, 111.41° East Longitude, or precisely located at sea at a distance of 23 KM south of Munjungan, Trenggalek, East Java, at a depth of 103 KM.

His party said the earthquake that occurred was a medium-sized earthquake due to rock deformation activity in the Indo-Australian Plate which was subducted under Java Island in the Benioff Zone.

"The results of the analysis of the source mechanism show that the earthquake has an oblique shear movement mechanism or an oblique strike-slip movement," he said.

The earthquake was felt in East Java and parts of Yogyakarta and Central Java, namely in the areas of Kulon Progo, Bantul, Wonogiri, Gunungkidul, Pacitan, Cilacap, Karangkates, Ponorogo, Nganjuk, Blitar, Trenggalek, Klaten, and Karanganyar with an intensity scale of II-III MMI, meaning that the vibration is felt real in the house, the vibration feels as if a truck is passing.

Meanwhile, in Lumajang, Madiun, and Kepanjen it was felt on the MMI intensity scale II or vibrations were felt by some people, light objects that were hung swayed.

"The results of BMKG monitoring have not shown any aftershocks," said Bambang.

Bambang appealed to the public to remain calm and stay away from buildings that were cracked or damaged by the earthquake.

In addition, before returning to their homes, people are asked to check and ensure that their residential buildings are earthquake-resistant or not damaged by earthquake vibrations that endanger the stability of the building.
