Bawaslu: Impossible To Handle Election Disputes In 6 Days

JAKARTA - Bawaslu member Lolly Suhenty stated that it is impossible to handle until the 2024 election dispute resolution is only 6 calendar days.

"Indeed, the matter of dispute resolution, if it is only 6 calendar days, it is impossible for Bawaslu to do it because we have to be very careful," said Lolly Suhenty after the Bawaslu Hearing activities in Jakarta, Antara, Thursday, June 9.

Election disputes, according to Lolly, require sufficient time from receiving the dispute report to its resolution. "Because this concerns the principle of justice for other people in the context of the election, Bawaslu will not be able to carry out a dispute resolution for only 6 days," he said again.

Even in Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning General Elections, he said, the time for resolving election disputes is clearly stated for 13 calendar days from the time the dispute report is received by Bawaslu.

This time is needed because the inspection stages are also not short. Bawaslu must examine the incoming dispute whether it can be continued at a later stage or not.

The possibility of a large number of dispute reports, said Lolly, will also make the time needed, the principle of justice, and even the right to the opportunity for people to file a lawsuit also be considered.

"We can't do it if it's only for 6 days because it's a matter of fairness, the opportunity for people to file a lawsuit must be taken into account," he said.

Previously, the draft KPU Regulation concerning the 2024 Election Stages stated that the settlement period for election disputes must be completed in only 6 calendar days. Furthermore, Bawaslu, during a hearing with the electoral tripartite in the DPR, expressed objections.

The KPU then said it would discuss with Bawaslu about a realistic election dispute resolution period to be implemented.

"It's true that last night there was already a synchronization with PKPU, so we are still working on this, it's still in the dialectical stage," he said.
