KEDIRI - The number of livestock belonging to residents affected by foot and mouth disease (PMK) in Kediri Regency, East Java, has expanded to 871 cases as of June 4, 2022 within two weeks.

Kediri Regent Hanindhito Himawan Pramana said the findings of the case two weeks ago in Kediri Regency, only a dozen people affected by foot and mouth disease. However, now the number has increased drastically hundreds of tails.

"This is within a period of approximately two weeks. Previously, two weeks ago there were zero cases related to the PMK case," said the Regent, quoted by Antara, Monday, June 6.

His party has taken a policy of temporarily closing the animal market with findings of an increase in cases of mouth and nail disease in Kediri Regency.

The Regent of Kediri also apologized for the policy taken if it did not please many parties. The policy was taken to anticipate the spread of the disease.

In the beginning there were 11 cases of PMK in Kediri Regency, his party was still opening an animal market. However, the regency government has tightened cattle traffic from other regencies/cities that will enter the market in Kediri Regency through eight check points.

"Frankly, seeing the simbahs depend on selling goats and cows for their livelihood, it was hard for me to make the decision to close," he said.

However, the fact that happened in the field is that there are traders who outsmart by bringing cattle from outside the area and once they enter Kediri Regency, they change to AG plate trucks and drivers. PMK cases are rapidly spreading massively. Until June 4, 2022, data from the Kediri Regency Food and Livestock Security Service (DKPP) contained 871 cases.

The decision to close the animal market, continued Mas Dhito, his nickname, for now is the best step to take. His party has carefully considered the decision with the ranks of the Forkopimda and the DKPP of Kediri Regency. The closure of the animal market lasts for two weeks and starts this week.

"We will close the market about three times, so it will take about two weeks. We will evaluate it after that there is a possibility that we will open it or we will continue to close it," he said.

He also emphasized that for now, closing the market is the best way. With the temporary closure, it is hoped that PMK cases can be controlled. Moreover, it has been less than a month since Eid al-Adha 2022.

"Pray for this case to decline soon, within two weeks the market will start to open again. Because I take into account Eid al-Adha in the second week of July, there should be no turnover of cows later," said Mas Dhito.
