PAPUA - The government of Lanny Jaya Regency, Papua Province, has budgeted around Rp. 7 billion to finance contract teachers of indigenous Papuans who are distributed throughout the district.

Head of the Lanny Jaya Education Office, Tan Wanimbo, said the funds were an allocation from the Lanny Jaya Smart program.

"We still use smart Lanny Jaya for hiring contract teachers. It costs almost Rp 6-7 billion for 500 Lanny Jaya contract teachers," he said while in Wamena, Antara, Thursday, June 2.

There are 500 teachers who are natives of Lanny Jaya Regency, not migrants or Papuans from other districts. "His name is Lanny's native (OAL) because all of them are Lanny Jaya's children," he said.

Tan ensures that this year there will be no more hiring of new contract teachers because the old ones are enough and have been distributed to fill the shortage of teachers at the PAUD, TK to SD levels.

"This local teacher's contract period will be evaluated. If it goes according to what we expect or helps the education office, we get satisfactory or good results, so continue," he said.

The government recruited the indigenous Lanny Jaya people in the hope that they would be directly involved in developing the area.

"We hope that the contract teachers for Lanny Jaya's children must be able to create satisfaction for the government but also the Lanny Jaya community," he said.
