Haven't Decided On 90 Days Campaign Period, DPR: President's Opinion Will Be Considered

JAKARTA - Deputy Chairman of Commission II of the DPR Yanuar Prihatin responded to the agreement between the General Elections Commission (KPU) and President Joko Widodo regarding the 90-day campaign period in the 2024 Election.

Yanuar explained that at a working meeting with the government and election organizers, the KPU was asked to simulate a 75-day campaign period. However, the results of this simulation have not been reported to Commission II of the DPR.

"There are actually two options for the duration of the campaign, namely 90 days or 75 days. This is the result of the previous meeting of Commission II, the KPU and the Ministry of Home Affairs. The KPU is asked to make a simulation if the campaign takes place within 75 days," Yanuar said when confirmed, Tuesday, May 31.

Yanuar said the KPU was asked to explain matters relating to the 75-day campaign duration. Includes obstacles, difficulties and risks that may arise if the campaign period is carried out for 75 days.

"The KPU simulation has not been received by Commission II until today. Maybe it will be officially submitted during the RDP with Commission II which is still scheduled. So, in the DPR itself it has not been decided whether the campaign will be 90 days or 75 days," he explained.

The PKB politician said that the KPU and President Jokowi's agreement yesterday at the Palace would be considered by the factions in Commission II. Including, considering the Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian.

"The president's opinion will certainly be taken into consideration by Commission II to make a decision. And I think other factions in the DPR, including the interior minister, will fully consider the president's opinion," said Yanuar.

"We will definitely ask the KPU for further explanation regarding its meeting with the President," he continued.

Yanuar emphasized that his party would consider the efficiency and effectiveness of the campaign period, both 75 days and 90 days.

"More than that, it is also related to efforts to minimize potential conflicts, feuds and even conflicts that may occur due to the long duration of the campaign. On the other hand, the longer the duration of the campaign, of course the costs will also increase, money politics will also be more open," he said. Yanuar.
