JAKARTA - PDIP Secretary General Hasto Kristiyanto said PDIP General Chair Megawati Soekarnoputri mourned the death of Islamic scholar and figure, Buya Syafii Maarif. He said Buya Syafii was Megawati's friend because both of them held positions in the Pancasila Ideology Development Agency (BPIP).

"When we conveyed the news of Buya's death to Megawati Soekarnoputri, she sobbed very sadly," said Hasto in a written statement to reporters, Friday, May 27.

"Buya Syafii is a person who is a friend of Mrs. Megawati, and together at BPIP. Mrs. Megawati really feels the loss of a statesman who is a reflection of intellectuality, a humble pious figure, a figure who is part of the nation's moral strength and provides an example in the ethics of living as a nation and state," he added.

Hasto said that Megawati and Buya Syafii's closeness was also due to an emotional bond. Moreover, Soekarno and Fatmawati, who are the parents of the 5th President of the Republic of Indonesia, are close to the Muhammadiyah group.

Megawati, continued Hasto, also often discusses many things in this country. "The two of them had a warm dialogue," he said.

Next, Megawati ordered PDIP cadres to pray for Buya Syafii. This is done as the best form of respect for the nation's leaders.

Not only that, Megawati also assigned the Minister of State Secretary (Menseneg) Pramono Anung and asked BPIP to coordinate regarding the protocol for respecting the state in the context of Buya Syafii's funeral.
