JAKARTA - The Government of Gunung Kidul Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) has tightened the entry and exit of livestock in this area to prevent foot and mouth disease (PMK) because it has been found in Sleman and Kulon Progo.

Head of the Gunung Kidul Livestock and Animal Health Service (DPKH) Wibawanti Wulandari in Wonosari, the capital city of Gunung Kidul Regency, Thursday, said that until now no cattle have been positive for mouth and nail disease (PMK).

"To prevent PMK, we have tightened traffic for livestock and livestock that are not allowed to enter from outside Gunung Kidul," he said, quoted from Antara, Thursday.

He said that his party carried out surveillance with the police and the DIY Agricultural Quarantine Center carried out surveillance at the entrance.

Farmers' animals for sale and their cars are sprayed with disinfectant to prevent spread.

"In the animal market, vehicles transporting livestock must be sprayed with disinfectant. Then, officers will strictly check the health certificates for livestock that are traded," said Wibawanti Wulandari.

Meanwhile, Head of Animal Health Division, Animal Husbandry and Animal Health Office of Gunung Kidul Retno Widiastuti asked the public to be aware of the spread of PMK.

“Gunung Kidul is still safe, no animals have been exposed so far. However, we are still tightening the anticipation for the entry of livestock from outside the region," he said.

His party continues to cooperate with various parties to conduct monitoring in a number of animal markets. Including controlling livestock entering and leaving Gunung Kidul.

"Animals that enter must have complete documents stating that the animal is healthy," he said.

He also said that by naked eye, animals exposed to FMD had special characteristics, including suddenly weak animals, around the mouth there were sores such as canker sores, and there were many wounds on the track.

"FMD is usually found in animals that have traces, hopefully there will be no cases in Gunung Kidul," said Retno Widiastuti.
