Preventing PMK Outbreaks, Pusvetma Surabaya Will Produce Inactivated Vaccines

SURABAYA - Center for Veterinary Farma (Pusvetma) Surabaya will produce a vaccine to prevent transmission of the oral and nail disease virus (PMK). Besides being asked by the Governor of East Java, Khofifah Indar Parawansa, the production of this vaccine is also a direct direction from the Minister of Agriculture.

"The name is the Inactive Vaccine (Killed Vaccine), and the development of this vaccine will be carried out using the tissue culture method," said the Head of the Surabaya Veterinary Center, Edi Budi Susila, in Surabaya, Wednesday, May 25.

Edi explained that this inactivated vaccine is a type of vaccine that contains a virus that has been tamed, or has been killed by heat, radiation, or chemicals. This process keeps the virus intact, but lacks the ability to reproduce.

"Well, this vaccine serves to protect livestock that have not been infected with the FMD virus. For those who have been infected, of course we will maximize their treatment and care," he said.

Currently, continued Edi, his party together with various parties continue to intensify education for breeders about the importance of maintaining animal health.

The reason is that in some areas there are still farmers who do not understand the handling of livestock that are indicated to be infected with FMD.

"For example, animals must be given vitamins so that their immunity increases and prevent transmission. Wash the cow's mouth with NaCL, then clean the cage with disinfectant every morning and evening, also make sure the cleanliness of the cage and equipment is always maintained," he said.

Edi said that the Pusvetma staff and the Expert Team were very open if there were additional professors from other regions to join in the effort to accelerate the handling of FMD for livestock through the manufacture of vaccines.

"We are very happy if for example there is a professor who is recommended by the Governor. Of course we are very open if there are professors from other places, to join in to accelerate the manufacture of this vaccine," he said.
