JAKARTA - Salvador Ramos, before attacking an elementary school in Texas, United States, actually shot his grandmother at home. Then he ran away and instead committed a massacre at the school.

Ramos, 18, killed 19 children and two teachers on Tuesday 24 May. The lethal weapon was bought for his birthday.

Ramos is a student in Uvalde, a small community near the Mexican border where the tragedy occurred.

All of this tragedy began when Ramos first tried to kill his grandmother by shooting at her home.

"The first incident was at their grandmother's residence where he shot the grandmother," said Erick Estrada of the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Luckily, the 66-year-old grandmother survived and was immediately hospitalized in San Antonio. However, his condition is still critical after the shooting.

After shooting his grandmother, Ramos fled the scene in a car wearing a bulletproof vest and armed with a rifle.

He then fell near a ditch outside Elementary School, got out and headed for the school.

At around 11.30 local time, Ramos entered the school and opened fire.

"And then from there, that's when he went on and entered some classrooms and started firing his gun," said Estrada.

Quoted from NBC News, the police stationed there failed to stop Ramos. The man was only managed to be paralyzed after the police tactical team arrived, then shot and finally Ramos died.

One of the Border Patrol agents was also briefly injured in a shootout with Ramos.

"Riding their own lives, these Border Patrol Agents and other officers placed themselves between the shooter and the children on the scene to draw the shooter's attention away from potential victims and save lives," DHS spokeswoman Marsha Espinosa said on Twitter.

"At least one Border Patrol Agent was injured by the shooter during the shootout," Espinosa said.
