KALTENG - A number of residents of Seruyan Regency, Central Kalimantan (Kalteng), were given education on how to complain about plantation conflicts according to regulations in the hope of being able to fight for their rights according to the rules.

"The Seruyan Regency Government has made regulations on how to complain about plantation conflicts but the community doesn't know it yet, so we are trying to encourage the public to know and the rules can be implemented properly," said Head of Palangkaraya Ecological and Human Rights Studies (Progress) Central Kalimantan Kartika Sari in Sampit, quoted as saying from Antara, Wednesday 25 May.

The Seruyan Regency Government has issued Seruyan Regent Regulation Number 11 of 2021 concerning Procedures for Complaints and Management of Plantation Business Conflict Data. This regulation is considered good as an effort by the local government to facilitate citizens to fight for their rights.

To help with that, said Kartika, the Sustainable Forestry Community Foundation held a two-day discussion. The activity, which was held at a hotel in Sampit, was attended by a number of representatives of the Seruyan Regional Apparatus Organization (OPD) and youth leaders representing a number of villages in Seruyan.

Kartika said the presence of the regent's regulation was considered good. For this reason, its implementation needs to be monitored so that the community can channel their aspirations and struggle properly in plantation conflicts.

According to him, conflicts over oil palm plantations in Central Kalimantan are quite sharp, especially in Seruyan and East Kotawaringin. As a region that declares sustainable development, Seruyan must take this problem seriously so that plantation conflicts can be resolved.

Sustainable development, he said, must avoid environmental damage and conflicts between communities, companies and workers. The presence of investment should be directly proportional to the increase in people's welfare.

For this reason, he said, the presence of the regent's regulation is expected to be a solution for the community in fighting for their rights related to plantation business conflicts. The regent's regulation must be socialized so that it is known and understood by the public.

Kartika said that of the seven villages they assisted, most of the residents did not know about the regent's regulations regarding complaints and data management of the plantation business conflicts.

"That's why we hope that this 'workshop' can provide knowledge to the public. We hope that there will be a commitment from the relevant agencies so that they don't just publish, but then how can they really ensure that it can be used by the community," Kartika explained.

Sarifudin, one of the residents expressed his gratitude for being able to participate in the event. A lot of knowledge was gained regarding how to complain about plantation business conflicts.

"Through this event, we can find out how to complain about problems according to the rules. This really helps us in responding to problems that arise. We ask for the local government's commitment to enforce the rules to protect people's rights," said Sarifudin.
