SURABAYA - The Surabaya City Government has started to record dozens of flats in Kota Pahlawan, East Java, which are old and in disrepair to receive priority for maintenance and repairs.

"Later, the Public Housing and Settlement Areas, Cipta Karya and Spatial Planning (DPRKPCKTR) Surabaya City Government will rehabilitate old flats. IDR 11 billion has been budgeted for the rehabilitation of flats," said Deputy Mayor (Wawali) Armuji when visiting Sumbo Flats, Surabaya quoted by Antara, Wednesday, May 18.

Armuji said the Surabaya City Government currently manages 20 simple rental flats (rusunawa). Of the tens of flats, he said, the Surabaya City Government is still listing which flats will be prioritized for maintenance first, given the limited budget.

The 20 flats include Urip Sumoharjo, Dupak Bangunrejo, Sombo, Penjaringansari, Warugunung, Wonorejo, Tanah Merah, Randu, Grudo and Pesapen Flats.

Then the Jambangan Flats, Siwalankerto, Romokalisari, Keputih, Bandarejo, Gununganyar, Dukuh Menanggal, Tambak Wedi, Indrapura and Pipe Acne Flats.

While at the Sumbo Flats, Armuji also directly checked the condition of the weathered roofs and collapsed ceilings accompanied by a number of local community leaders. For this reason, Armuji asked the public or the residents of the flats to be diligent in maintaining the cleanliness and structure of the flats that residents occupy.

"There are a number of buildings that have been added by themselves, later please tidy them up because the design of this flat has been calculated. Cleanliness must also be maintained as our shared responsibility," he said.

Sumbo Flats are the most densely populated flats in the city of Surabaya. There are approximately 700 families or 4,000 people who inhabit the first flat in Surabaya, which was built in 1986. The flat consists of ten blocks.

Armuji also said that the cost of renting the Sumbo Flats is relatively affordable, the average is less than Rp. 100 thousand. There is also a rental fee of only Rp. 50 thousand, Rp. 75 thousand, even Rp. 90 thousand, according to the flat floor.

"If you are looking for a boarding house in Surabaya, there is nothing of that value. That's why it must be taken care of together," he said.
