KPU: 2024 Election Stages Begin June 14, 2022

JAKARTA - General Elections Commission (KPU) commissioner Mochammad Afifuddin said the 2024 General Election (Election) phase will begin on June 14, 2022. The steps towards the five-year democratic party will be implemented immediately.

"The most important thing is that the PKPU has not been enacted or ratified," he said at the virtual "State Constitutional Law" National Symposium as reported by Antara, Wednesday, May 18.

The reason, he said, is that there is still a conflict about how long or when the campaign period will be carried out. This will intersect with various agencies/institutions, for example the section on constitutional law.

Afifuddin said some members of the DPR and the government proposed a 90-day campaign period. However, this has an impact or has the potential to "sacrifice" the time for handling disputes at Bawaslu and at the State Administrative Court (PTUN).

"This means that if the campaign period is formulated for 90 days, then the 2024 election dispute handling time is only 10 days," he said.

In fact, he said, usually the handling of disputes at Bawaslu can take up to 12 working days and does not include repairs.

Then, after it is simulated a new option appears, which is 75 days. The KPU will emphasize on two aspects, namely that the government must help with many things, including the Presidential Regulation (Perpres) on Procurement of Logistics, Shipping, and so on.

Second, regarding the electoral justice or people who submit objections/disputes the election has a long enough time. However, all of these things are still being simulated by the KPU in order to find the best possibility.

Afifuddin added that in early August 2022 the registration of political parties had begun. Registration of political parties is one of the important milestones regarding the excitement of the election. In its journey, the campaign period has been carried out for quite a long or short time. However, for the 2024 election, the campaign period has been shortened somewhat. The reason is polarization concerns and so on.
