JAKARTA - Member of Commission IX of the DPR, Luqman Hakim, appreciates the government's policy announced by President Jokowi regarding the revocation of the obligation to wear masks for people who are active outdoors.
"This policy reflects that the government has remained consistent, systematic, and measurable in controlling COVID-19. It is not easy to be complacent and careless in responding to the COVID-19 phenomenon, which has recently proven to be sloping," Luqman said in a statement in Jakarta, Wednesday, May 18.
He supports President Jokowi's policy of gradually normalizing people's lives from the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to him, the gradual lifting of policies to limit community activities as the COVID-19 pandemic is getting more under control is proof that the government has careful planning, is not in a hurry, prioritizes the health and safety of the people.
"This decision shows the success of handling the COVID-19 pandemic that the government has carried out so far. This success is due to the active role of the public who generally comply with various COVID-19 control policies set by the government," he said as quoted by Antara.
Luqman asked the public to give full support to the gradual normalization policy because the government did not want to maintain restrictions so that people would experience difficulties.
However, according to him, the government intends to ensure that the COVID-19 pandemic ends by prioritizing the safety of people's lives. He assessed that the government was carrying out one of the objectives of Islamic law, namely "hifdz nafs" or protecting the rights of human life.
Previously, the government relaxed the policy on wearing masks in open areas by considering the COVID-19 pandemic which was considered under control.
"By taking into account the current conditions in which the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia is increasingly under control, the government has decided to relax the policy on wearing masks," said President Jokowi at the Bogor Presidential Palace, Tuesday, May 17.
However, the easing of the rules for wearing masks only applies outdoors and not in closed rooms or mass transportation.
"If people are active outdoors or in open areas that are not crowded with people, they are allowed not to use masks, but for activities in closed rooms and public transportation, they must still use masks," said the President.
Meanwhile, for people who are categorized as vulnerable, elderly or have comorbid diseases, President Jokowi still recommends wearing masks when doing activities.
