Agriculture Service Ensures Livestock In Karawang Are Still Free From Mouth And Nail Diseases

KARAWANG - Mouth and nail disease (PMK) is now starting to worry farmers in a number of areas. The Department of Agriculture in a number of regions in Indonesia immediately tightened monitoring to prevent its spread.

The Karawang Regency Agriculture Office also monitors PMK in their area. The results are encouraging. No farm animals have been exposed to FMD.

"Alhamdulillah, from the results of monitoring to airports carried out over the past few days, there has been no finding of livestock affected by FMD," said Head of Livestock at the local Agriculture Service, Handoko, as reported by Antara, Saturday, May 14.

He said that such monitoring was carried out at livestock ports in the Karawang area, which often brought cattle from East Java.

In addition, his party also continues to intensify socialization to extension workers in each sub-district to optimize monitoring of cattle, sheep and goats in the Karawang area.

Handoko conveyed, for the symptoms experienced by livestock affected by FMD, the characteristics were the presence of sores on the tongue, gums, nose and mouth, which generally attack livestock with even hooves.

"This PMK attacks livestock with even hoofs, such as cows, horses, goats, sheep including pigs. It's just that the distribution of livestock is mostly cows due to Eid al-Adha," he said.

He collects that animal breeders, especially the distribution of cattle in Karawang, should be more aware of PMK and if they want to buy livestock from East Java, try to get an Animal Health Certificate from the area of origin and have blood checked from the lab as a guarantee.
